It Takes Two to Talk

It Takes Two To Talk is a parent coaching program specifically designed for young children, aged birth to five years, who have delayed language. Capable Kids is excited to offer a flexible delivery, where session content is delivered online via seven informative, interactive small group sessions. Parents then have the option of having their three individual child sessions in the clinic at Engadine or online. The individual sessions are for you and your child to interact with your Speech Pathologist and include a video recording of you and your child interacting togher, followed by discussion with and feedback from your Speech Pathologist.

It Takes Two To Talk teaches parents and caregivers, step-by-step, how to become your child’s most important teacher. In this program you will be taught to:

  • Recognise your child’s stage and style of communication, so that you can identify the next steps and goals.
  • Identify what motivates your child to communicate.
  • Use the strategy “Follow the Child’s Lead” to build their confidence and encourage them to communicate with you.
  • Adjust everyday routines to help your child take turns back and forth in interactions.
  • Talk to your child in ways that help them understand language and then use it when they’re ready.
  • Use the strategies when you play and read books with your child to help them interact and learn language.

It Takes Two To Talk forms the first step in the Capable Kids Early Language Pathway. This is an accelerated admission program which allows families to reduce their time on the waiting list. Through participating in It Takes Two To Talk you and your child will be seen earlier, and then prioritised to individual placement upon completion of the program if needed. Over 50% of our participants do not require individual therapy after participating in the It Takes Two to Talk program.
