TalkAbility

TalkAbility is a program designed for parents of children aged 4-8 years who are autistic or have differences in social communication. The program makes the most of your child’s unique strengths and preferences, as well as their natural day-to-day activities, to help them find more joy and connection in their interactions and to foster mutual understanding between your child and the most important people in their life.

At Capable Kids we offer a flexible delivery for the TalkAbility program where parents can attend the seven informative, interactive small group sessions online, and then have the choice to attend the parent-child interaction sessions in the clinic or online. TalkAbility gives you research-based strategies to use during the everyday activities you already do with your child. This way, your child expands their social communication skills in the natural context of the things, people and topics that matter to them, making the learning more meaningful to them. In TalkAbility you will learn to:

  • Understand your child’s perspective and help them understand the perspectives of others.
  • Support your child to have longer, more meaningful conversations with both adults and peers.
  • Encourage your child to understand non-verbal messages within the social context in which they are communicated.
  • Foster your child’s friendship skills.

The TalkAbility programme will be offered to eligible families who are on our waiting list to allow them to access services while they wait for individual therapy placements. Please refer to the research summary on the Hanen Workshop for more information about the research on TalkAbility:
